Yesterday evening in the pub (drop in at the Adelphi in The Parade every Tuesday 5.30-6.30pm) there was talk about names of fish and about fishing. What are those small members of the shark family caught around our coasts called? For the non-expert and the non-fisherman, all those dog-fish and sharky creatures go under the name of du tchian (dog) or du tchian d'mé (dog of the sea).

More specifically:

  • haû = white hound, tope (Galeorhinus galeus)
  • d'mouaîselle = smooth hound (Mustelus mustelus) - it was believed by many fisherman in the past that the d'mouaîselle was the female of the haû; also spiny dogfish, picked dogfish (Squalus acanthias)
  • bliu = smooth hound (Mustelus mustelus)
