Donne-mé man Noué aniet

Né v'chîn un cantique dé Noué composé s'lon la vielle arînmée d'Noué "Man Noué, Man Noué s'i' vos pliaît". Ch'est en tchi auve un mio d'rareunn'nie les patholes d'l'arînmée peuvent êt' chantées sus l'air du cantique "Noël Nouvelet" - épis nou-s'a ajouôté acouo tchique lîngnes d'à propos. Pouor l'histouaithe d'aller crier san Noué, viyiz chein qu'j'avons bliodgi d'vant:

Here's a Christmas carol put together from an old Jèrriais Christmas begging rhyme. As it turns out, with a bit of rejigging, the words can be sung to the carol tune "Noël Nouvelet (Sing We Now of Christmas)" with the addition of some extra seasonal food-related lyrics. The history of the Christmas begging rhymes can be caught up with in some earlier blogposts:

Reminiscing, Mrs. Huelin tells of her girlhood days when, at Christmas, groups of the poorer children of the parish would go from house to house shouting "Mon Nou[é], mon Nou[é], s'il vous plaît," and would be given food and money...

Jersey Weekly Post, 8/1/1970

Quand j'tais mousse ès Landes à St Ouën, ch'tait acouo la couôteunme d'aller crier Noué par les c'mîns, chantant "Noué! Noué! - man Noué, man Noué, s'i' vous pliaît!"

George d'La Forge, 1982

An old Jersey custom was for (poor) children to go round houses in the neighbourhood at Christmas and New Year, begging for a gift of food (rather like trick-or-treating at Halloween nowadays, only with not even a hint of a trick). There were traditional rhymes that went with doing the rounds.

"Noué, Noué, man Noué, s'i' vouos pliaît! Un morcé d'gâche sus l'but dé l'ais"
(Christmas, Christmas, my Christmas [box] please - a piece of cake on the end of the shelf/mantelpiece).
