Hanukkah is the Jewish festival of light which falls, whether by coincidence or the fact that both festivals have their calendars fixed as midwinter solstice celebrations, close to Christmas. Although this festival is far from as important religiously as Passover, its calendar closeness to Christmas has made it, especially in the United States, a big occasion, and over there it forms part of the end-of-year holiday pile-up from Thanksgiving to New Year.

Hanukkah commemorates the reconsecration of the temple and the miracle of the lamps that lasted despite the shortage of oil. Latkes (potato pancakes) are traditionally eaten. Happy Hanukkah!
